Small dogs are sometimes stereotyped as "yappy," hyperactive, and hard to teach, but that's not always true. 

Small dogs—even toy breeds—have lots of personality. Despite their small size, these dogs are loyal and affectionate to adults and children.

 Big eyes and a round or apple-shaped head are breed traits. They have long or short coats and different hues.

Chihuahuas are too delicate for physical play, so they fare best without small children. They are versatile and friendly pets that need winter protection.

The small Pomeranian has the presence of a lion, and not just because of its luxurious double coat. The little dog can run your family if not trained.

Poms are 6–7 inches tall and 3–7 pounds. They are the smallest Spitz, along with the Samoyed, Alaskan malamute, and Norwegian elkhound.

Poms are smart, loyal, and cute. They make great watchdogs and get along with kids, but like other little dogs on our list, their size limits rough play.
